Mariah Ritty Ross was born into a family of slaves in Maryland. She is the 2nd eldest child and is affectionately referred to as “Mary” by her siblings.

Her mother was named Harriet Green and her grandmother came from Africa in a slave ship that conducted the Atlantic slave trade. Her father, Benjamin Ross, was a slave formerly owned by Anthony Thompson.

She is a bi-ethnic rapper, who has a mix of Italian and Puerto Rican origins. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 17, 1990. She is the eldest child of Raphael Araujo and Tasha Jacoby Araujo.

During her childhood, she faced many challenges because of her mother’s addiction and her father’s imprisonment on multiple occasions. Despite these obstacles, she never abandoned her family.

Mother

Mariah Ritty Ross was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She is the second eldest of her siblings and is also the sister of Harriet Tubman.

Her father, Ben Ross, was a slave who worked for Anthony Thompson, an owner of a thousand acres plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her mother, Rit Green, was a slave owned by Thompson’s deceased second wife Mary Pattison Brodess.

In 1808, Ben and Rit were married and their first child was Linah. Their second child, Soph, was born in 1813.

Then came Robert, in 1816. And finally Minty, or Harriet Tubman, in 1822.

Father

Mariah Ritty Ross was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She is the fifth child of her mother Harriet Rit Green and father Ben Ross.

Her mother was owned by Mary Pattison Brodess (and later her son Edward) while her father was held by Anthony Thompson. Both men were plantation owners who lived at Peters Neck and Poplar Neck in Dorchester County, Maryland.

The Brodess family was small compared to the other plantations in the area. So, they were often unable to utilize all of their enslaved laborers.

This deteriorated the economic value of their estate. So, they started selling some of their enslaved people to southern slave traders.

They eventually sold Linah, Soph and Mariah Ritty to out-of-state buyers, permanently tearing their family apart. The rift between Rit and her children was further aggravated by Brodess’s refusal to liberate her as required under his great-grandfather’s will, which also stipulated that she and her children be manumitted when they reached the age of forty-five.

Siblings

She was born on a farm in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1822. Her parents were Ben Ross and Harriet Greene.

Her father was a slave who belonged to Anthony Thompson. He was a skilled woodsman who oversaw other slaves who cut and logged timber.

He and Harriet Greene met on Thompson’s property and married in 1808. They had nine children: Linah (1808), Mariah Ritty, Soph, Robert, Araminta “Minty” (Harriet) Tubman, Ben, Rachel, Henry, Moses and William.

When she was five years old, Tubman got her first job caring for a newborn baby. She was later given the name Minty, but she also took on nicknames like “Gina” or “Mary.”
