Steven Stayner and His Wife Today
Steven Stayner was a young man who made an incredible escape from kidnappers and came home to his family. He became the focus of media attention and struggled to acclimate to life with his family.
He married 17-year-old Jody Edmondson in 1985 and had two children. He also worked with child abduction groups and spoke to children about personal safety. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just before his death.

Jody Edmondson Stayner is a philanthropist who has been working for many years in the field of conservation. She has been dedicated to protecting marine life, fighting wildlife trafficking, and saving Africa’s animals.
She has been married to Steven Stayner since June 1985. They have two children, Ashley and Steven Jr.
Though they are a family of three, Jody and Steven had to deal with several disagreements over the years. They tried to make things better despite the trauma they had faced.
They eventually created a beautiful family together. Thankfully, they were able to forgo the past and live a happy life.
After the kidnapping, Steven struggled to adjust to living with his family in Merced, California. He had disciplinary problems at school and racked up more than $1000 in driving tickets.
Steven Stayner’s Childhood
In 1972, when he was seven years old in Merced, California, Steven Stayner was approached by a man who claimed to be offering religious pamphlets. He was offered a ride home, and he accepted.
However, the man was actually Kenneth Parnell, a known child molester. During the course of his ordeal, Steven suffered unthinkable sexual and emotional abuse.
Despite the trauma he suffered, he managed to live a normal life with his family and friends. He married and had two children, Ashley and Steven Jr.
Steven’s ordeal wasn’t over when he returned to his parents, though. He faced bullying and was teased by his classmates because he had been abused. He also drank to numb his feelings about what had happened.
Steven Stayner’s Kidnapping
In 1972, Steven Stayner was just 7 years old when he was kidnapped by pedophile Kenneth Parnell. He was living in Merced, California when the incident happened.
Parnell took Steven to a cabin in Catheys Valley where he brainwashed him to think his parents didn’t want him anymore. He moved him to different towns and schools for a period of time.
The abuse that Parnell did to him was beyond what he had imagined. He abused him physically, emotionally and sexually.
Despite this, he managed to survive and overcome the trauma of his ordeal. After his escape, he married Jody Edmondson and fathered two children.
In the years that followed, Stayner worked with child abduction organizations and gave interviews about his kidnapping. He also collaborated with a child safety agency and spoke to kids about their personal safety.
Steven Stayner’s Death
In September 1989, Stayner was riding his motorcycle home from work when it was struck by a car. He suffered catastrophic head injuries and died from them.
Steven was born to Delbert and Kay Stayner in Merced, California on April 18, 1965. He was one of two sons and three daughters in the family.
He was abducted by pedophile and child molester Kenneth Parnell on December 4, 1972, in Merced, California. He was held captive for 38 miles (61 kilometers) in Mariposa County and Mendocino County, until he was 14 years old, at which point he escaped with another of Parnell’s victims, then five-year-old Timothy White.
Stayner had survived seven years of abuse and kidnapping to then die in a motorcycle accident nine years after escaping from Parnell. The story of his ordeal is one that you’re unlikely to forget, and Hulu’s latest true-crime documentary, Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story, traces it.
