Early Life

Pete Maravich was born on June 22, 1947 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Petar and Helen Gravor Maravich.

In college, he played for LSU, where he was coached by his father Press Maravich. He was a three-time SEC Player of the Year and a three-time consensus first team All-American.


He set a still-standing NCAA record of 44.2 points per game during his Tigers’ career. He also led LSU to the semifinals of the NIT in 1970.

He was a star in the NBA as well, where he won one league scoring title and five trips to the NBA All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. He was known as one of the best ball-handlers in the history of the game and was a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.


He traveled the country sharing his story of transformation and became a born-again Christian. On January 5, 1988, he died playing a pickup game in a church gymnasium.

He died of heart failure at the age of 40. He was a beloved sports hero who had touched millions. But he also had a rare congenital heart defect that took his life instantly.

He has two sons

Maravich was blessed with two sons, Josh and Jaeson. He taught them how to play basketball and he also helped them build their faith in Christ.

After he retired, Maravich moved to Covington, Louisiana, where he spent time with his sons. He would take them up to the third floor of his house and they would practice their dribbling skills.

He taught them to use their bodies to create space in the middle of the court and he also helped them develop a strong work ethic. He also volunteered to help them with their studies and he pushed them to do their best.

His passion for basketball and his infectious faith in Jesus were a big part of his success as a professional player, and he was a popular figure with fans.

When Maravich decided to turn his life over to Jesus, he became a different person and he started to spread the word about Christianity. He was a great role model for his sons and he remained a huge fan of the game.
