Robert Clary

After surviving concentration camps as a youth, Parisian Jewish actor Robert Clary went on to star on Hogan’s Heroes, the 1960s sitcom set in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Clary, who grew up in France, first recorded songs as an amateur singer, and later moved stateside and got his start on TV shows like The Ed Wynn Show and the Colgate Comedy Hour. He also appeared on Broadway and in films, including 1952’s Thief of Damascus.

In 1965, he was offered the role of Corporal Louis LeBeau on Hogan’s Heroes, in which he played a French soldier serving with an Allied sabotage unit inside Stalag 13. The series ran until 1971, and during its run, Clary acted in a number of movies and made-for-TV movies with World War II themes, including the 1975 movie The Hindenburg about a fictional plot to blow up the famous airship. After his time on Hogan’s Heroes, he starred on soap operas such as Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless.
