He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Sally and Floyd Braugher. He attended St. Ignatius College Prep and then Stanford University, where he earned a B.A. in theater in 1984. He also graduated from the Juilliard School’s Drama Division with a master’s degree in 1988. He has performed off-Broadway and has narrated numerous projects, including the PBS documentary Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet.

Braugher has won a number of awards in his career including the Viewers for Quality Television Award and Satellite Awards for Best Actor – Television Series Drama. He has also won a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He has also acted in several films including City of Angels, Frequency and Poseidon.

He has a son named Michael and two daughters named Isaiah and John. He married Ami Brabson in 1991 and has a very happy marriage that is free of all the social media dramas that come with such celebrity couples. They live in South Orange, New Jersey and have three children. In 1996, he was nominated for an Obie Award for his role in the off-Broadway production of Henry V at the Delacorte Theatre, Central Park.
