Jean Smart is an American actress. She began her acting career in the theater, appearing in professional regional productions and Off-Broadway plays.
She was a member of the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. She also appeared on Broadway in the 1984 version of Piaf, playing Marlene Dietrich.

Jean Elizabeth Smart was born on September 13, 1951, in Seattle, Washington. She grew up in the same neighborhood with her family and went to Ballard High School where she was interested in acting.
After high school, she graduated and enrolled in the University of Washington’s Professional Actors Training Program. She eventually graduated with a BFA and began her career on the stage in regional theater productions in the Pacific Northwest.

Married to Richard Gilliland
Actress Jean Smart and actor Richard Gilliland met on the set of Designing Women. The two married in an intimate ceremony held in fellow Designing Women cast member Dixie Carter’s garden in 1987, according to USA Today.
Their first child, Connor, 31, was born in 1989. They also adopted daughter Bonnie Kathleen, who is 12 years old.
After their marriage, Smart and Gilliland began to work together on various shows. They were paired in the Fox series 24, where he played Captain Stan Cotter and she was the first lady, as well as the telefilms Just My Imagination and Audrey’s Rain.
In 2017, the pair reunited on the big screen in Breaking News in Yuba County, a film directed by Tate Taylor. They also worked together on the stage in It Had to Be You and Love Letters.
Gilliland died in March of a heart condition at the age of 71. He and Smart shared two children, a son named Connor 31 and a daughter called Bonnie Kathleen 12. They also adopted Forrest from China in 2009.
