Irving Henry Vincent (1864-1941) was an American writer and sociologist. He was born in Rockford, Illinois and attended Yale University and the University of Chicago.
He was an important figure in the field of education and sociology. His writings have made an impact on society and continue to influence generations of people.
Born in Bouctouche

He became a writer in his early years. He wrote many short stories and also became a successful writer of novels.

Raised in New York City
Washington Irving was born into a well-to-do merchant family in New York City, and grew up surrounded by books and literature. He was drawn to the fabled Hudson River Valley, a place of myth and legend that became a source of inspiration for his writings.
He worked for his family’s import-export business until it went bankrupt in 1815, at which point he decided to become a writer. He published a series of short stories in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.
The Sketch Book reflected his interest in folklore and was influential in gaining international respect for American literature. Among his best-known stories are “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” both of which incorporate supernatural elements into their plots.
Enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I
When airpower was still an early concept, a select group of men were the early pioneers of a group called the Royal Flying Corps.
In World War I, the RFC was a vital part of the British armies’ war effort – directing artillery fire and taking photographs from the air to support infantry operations. However, as soon as Hugh Trenchard took over as Field Commander in August 1915, the RFC began to take more of a direct role in the battles themselves by attacking enemy machine gun emplacements and trenches with deadly precision.
Initially, all pilots entered the service by transfer from an Army unit, but after April 1916 officers could also apply for a direct commission into the RFC. Alternatively they could join the Special Reserve, which was sometimes referred to as the ‘civilian pilots’ and included many well-known pre-war aviators such as Geoffrey de Havilland and BC Hucks.

Educated at the University of Chicago
Vincent entered the University of Chicago in 1892, becoming the first graduate student in the world’s first sociology department. He worked with Albion Woodbury Small to write “An Introduction to the Study of Society,” which was the first sociology textbook ever published in the United States.
He received his doctorate in 1896 and remained on the faculty. He was also the founder of the American Sociological Society.
In 1917, he was appointed president of the Rockefeller Foundation and served in that position until 1931. During his tenure, he expanded the Foundation’s public health activities and initiated programs in the natural sciences. He also oversaw a major reorganization of the Foundation into five divisions.
Educated at the University of Minnesota
He was a renowned American author who wrote a series of short stories. He influenced many other writers in the genre and introduced several now-familiar images and archetypes to the national literature.
Irving was a writer of clear, engaging prose that charmed even his detractors. He created sharp visual images that remained in the reader’s mind after the book was closed.
