How to Care For Keratin Hair Extensions

Keratin hair extensions are a great way to add volume and length to your hair. But it’s important to know how to care for them.

Stylists use a special bonding adhesive to attach the extensions to your natural hair. It creates a stronger installation and can last up to six months, depending on how you care for it.

Washing

When you wash your keratin hair extensions, you must take special care to avoid scrubbing and scratching the bonds/rings on your head. You also have to use a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner that are specially made for extensions.

First, try to brush your fusion strands before washing them to make them tangle-free. You can do this using a soft bristle brush or a Tangle Teaser (for the ends) to gently detangle them.

Apply a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to your locks from the mid shaft to the ends, making sure not to rub the roots or near the bonds with a scrubbing motion. Rinse well to remove any excess shampoo.

You should only wash your keratin hair extensions once a week to keep them healthy and to reduce product buildup. Too many washes can cause greasy roots and damage the bonds of your keratin hair extensions.

Brushing

Keratin hair extensions are an excellent way to add length, volume, and shine to your tresses. But like your own natural hair, they need a little extra care to stay looking their best.

Brushing is a key component of caring for your keratin hair extensions. You should brush your strands at least twice a day – more if you want to keep them tangle-free.

To do this, start with clean and dry hair and use a soft-bristled brush to avoid breaking or damaging your keratin extensions. Then, brush your strands in small sections, working your way up the head.

You should also brush your strands before you sleep to prevent them from tangling and matting in bed. You can even braid them loosely to help keep your strands in place overnight.

Brushing can be a bit more difficult than comb-in, i-tip, hot fusion, or clip-in extensions because of the nature of the keratin bond, but it is important to do so to make sure your strands look and feel as good as possible.

Sleeping

Hair extensions are a great way to add volume and length to your natural hair. However, they require extra care to stay healthy and long-lasting.

Whether you are wearing keratin, tape-in, or weft extensions, it is important to sleep with them properly to avoid any damage. This will keep them looking and feeling their best and ensure a longer lifespan.

The most effective way to sleep with your keratin hair extensions is to secure them with a plait or turned under ponytail. This will keep them in place all night and prevent them from moving while you sleep.

You should also choose a silk pillowcase to prevent breakage and absorb moisture from your hair. If you don’t have a silk pillowcase, you can use a satin or cotton one, but make sure it is not too thin!

Drying

Keratin hair extensions are non-damaging, but they need to be cared for properly. Luckily, they’re easy to keep looking healthy and shiny as long as you follow a few simple steps!

Besides using products that don’t contain sulfates, you should also avoid applying too much heat to your keratin hair extensions. Flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers can damage your fusion bonds.

Before you wash your keratin hair extensions, make sure they’re tangle-free and dry completely. Then, use a mild shampoo and a light conditioner to keep your extensions looking fresh.

Your keratin bond won’t hold onto oils, so it’s best to avoid heavy product buildup and oils. You may also want to stay away from half ponytails or other up-dos since they might be visible.

It’s also a good idea to avoid sleeping on your hair or with your keratin bonds wet, as they can slip. This will make them look messy and uncomfortable, but it’ll go away after a few days.
