As a child, Surbeck knew he wanted to work with animals, but he didn’t anticipate he’d end up in the African rainforest to do so. He went to the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the University of Zurich to study biology and zoology, and then received a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. It’s believed that Martin was one of the men who came to her aid and helped her out of the rainforest. Since then, he’s been working closely with her at the Kokolopori Bonobo research facility.
