Clara Jacobs was born in Ilion, New York, on April 25, 1894. She was a gifted pianist and composer, who loved to write skits and sing for silent movies.
Her parents encouraged her to pursue her dream of being an Episcopal priest. She graduated from Howard University in 1916.
In the 1930s, she began to do fieldwork with the Nehalem Tillamook and southwestern Oregon Athabaskans. Her work with them produced significant linguistic, ethnographic, and folkloristic documentation of their languages and cultures.
She also facilitated the development of a folklore database of southwestern Oregon Athabaskan stories. Her Pitch Woman and Other Stories is the first book-length ethnography of a Western Oregon Native group.
In addition to her anthropology research, she wrote and published two books of poetry. Her work was influenced by her own experiences as a woman of color.
