When Jesse was a toddler, the Coopers were shocked to learn that their son had severe cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia. He was nonverbal and in a wheelchair, he was not meeting his developmental milestones, and his body was rigid when he rolled over or held his head up.
He had been in and out of the hospital for four months when he was finally diagnosed. He was referred to Boston Children’s Hospital where he was officially diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia.
When it came time to place him in school, the Coopers struggled. They tried to provide a classroom aide at their own expense, but the school insisted it was the sole decision maker and that the Coopers didn’t have a “right” to choose what aide their son should receive and how he should be taught.
