The grandparents of Jackson Mattoon were Sam and Shirley Ann Mattoon. Sam was present when President John F. Kennedy visited Grey Towers, Gifford Pinchot’s ancestral home and forestry museum, in 1963. He was a longtime U.S. Forest Service employee and a graduate of the Yale School of Forestry.
The forestry roots of the family extend even further. Merwin Mattoon married Marguerite McLean of Simsbury, Connecticut, which was Pinchot’s birthplace and early home. Gifford was close friends with the McLean family and would fish together.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 14, 2019, at the Fields Church in Mattoon, with Pastor Travis Spencer officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon is assisting the family.
