A singer and actress who has won a host of awards, Mary J. Blige has captivated audiences with her soulful voice and powerful performance. She has also made a successful transition into film, with roles in Prison Song (2001), Rock of Ages (2012), Betty and Coretta (2013), Black Nativity (2013), Mudbound (2017) and her Golden Globe-nominated breakthrough role as Florence Jackson in Trolls World Tour (2020).

Born in the Bronx, New York, Blige began moving people with her soulful voice when she was 18 years old and signed with Andre Harrell’s MCA-distributed Uptown Records. She worked with Sean “Puffy” Combs to produce her debut album, What’s the 411? a multi-platinum set that blended R&B with hip-hop and urban contemporary rhythm and blues.

Her sixth studio album, Love & Life, released in 2003 on Geffen Records, saw her return to the spotlight with longtime collaborator Sean “Puffy” Combs. While it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, Love & Life failed to match the success of What’s the 411 or her previous studio albums. Singles such as “Love @ 1st Sight,” “Not Today,” and the international re-release of “Whenever I Say Your Name” didn’t fare as well.

Thomas Blige

Thomas Blige is the father of R&B singer Mary J. He was stabbed in a domestic dispute on Thursday morning, Battle Creek police say. He suffered a neck wound and was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The incident happened outside the apartment where the Bliges live on the south side of Battle Creek, police said. The 63-year-old was allegedly stabbed by his ex-girlfriend, Cheryl White.

Her attack left a deep cut in Thomas’s neck, chest and arm. He was able to recover, but was in the hospital for several days afterward.

The woman who stabbed Thomas has been sentenced to 365 days in the Calhoun County Jail. She pleaded no contest to assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.

Bruce Miller

LaTonya Blige-DaCosta is a composer and singer who is best known as the elder sister of Mary J. Blige, a Grammy award-winning singer and actress.

She has a younger brother named Bruce Miller, who is also an accomplished composer. He has written music for various projects and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1989.

He is a highly decorated artist who has been awarded sixteen BMI TV and Film Awards, fourteen SESAC awards and two prestigious SESAC Legacy awards. He is an avid sailor and a yoga enthusiast.

He has also written several books on business topics and spirituality. He has a special interest in the teachings of Reshad Feild and helped bring Jalaluddin Rumi to America. He has been a member of The Institute for Conscious Life, the Mevlana Foundation and Chalice Guild. He has led residential seminars on Sapelo Island in Georgia and Mendocino, CA.

LaTonya Blige-DaCosta

LaTonya Blige-DaCosta is the elder sister of famous rap star Mary J. Blige and she is also known for her work on Mary J. Featuring Lil Kim hits ( I Can Love You and Intimate Portrait).

She is an American composer, producer, and entrepreneur, who is best known for her work on Mary J. Blige Feat. I Can Love You (1997) and Intimate Portrait (1998) by Lil’ Kim.

Blige is known for her career in music since 1988 and has released nine albums, two of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Her 2005 album The Breakthrough was her first number one on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, selling 727,000 copies in its first week.

Blige’s father, Thomas Blige, was a jazz musician who thought that his daughter would sing but later abandoned the family in 1980. He was a Vietnam War veteran and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. He also physically abused his wife and daughters. He eventually divorced Cora and she had three children: Mary J. Blige, Bruce Miller, and LaTonya Blige-DaCosta.
