He was married to Estelle Getty on 24th December 1947 that was 9 month after they met. They were blessed with 2 sons, Barry and Carl.

Estelle Scher was born July 25, 1923, in New York City to Sarah (Lacher) and Charles Scher, Polish Jewish immigrants who worked in the glass business. Her father died when she was young.
As a child, she watched vaudeville and had a sense that she wanted to become an actress. She got her start as a performer in community theater.
She later made her Broadway debut in Harvey Fierstein’s autobiographical Torch Song Trilogy, and the play brought Estelle national acclaim and long-awaited recognition. In 1988, she won the Helen Hayes Award for her performance and was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Emmy seven times.
After her success on the stage, she was cast on TV as Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls, a sitcom that ran for seven years and garnered 57 Emmy nominations. She starred with Betty White and Rue McClanahan.
Throughout her life, she also used her fame to help out with social issues. She was an avid supporter of gay rights and was a dedicated AIDS activist. In 1991, she helped nurse her 29-year-old nephew Steven Scher, who was battling AIDS. She died in 2008 from Lewy Body dementia at age 87. She is survived by her two sons, Carl and Barry Gettleman.

She suffered from advanced dementia and died at her Hollywood Boulevard home Tuesday morning, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.
